Cold Snaps and Cracked Pipes: Winter Plumbing Tips for Houston Homes

It doesn't often freeze hard in Houston, but when it does...

While Houston winters are typically mild, we all know the weather here can change quickly. A sudden cold snap — even one or two nights below freezing — can lead to burst pipes, costly repairs, and major disruptions at home.

Fortunately, a few simple preventative steps can help protect your plumbing before temperatures drop. Whether you're a first-time homeowner or a long-time Houston resident, now is the time to prepare your pipes for the possibility of winter weather.

1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipes located in unheated areas — such as attics, garages, crawl spaces, and exterior walls — are most vulnerable to freezing. Use foam pipe insulation sleeves or heat tape to protect them from cold air.

Don’t forget outdoor spigots and irrigation lines, which are especially prone to damage in freezing temperatures.

2. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses

Leaving garden hoses connected during a freeze can cause water to back up into your home’s pipes and freeze inside. Disconnect all hoses, drain any remaining water, and store them indoors for the season.

If your outdoor faucets don’t have frost-proof covers, consider installing inexpensive insulated faucet covers to reduce risk.

3. Let Faucets Drip During a Freeze

During extended cold spells, allow a slow drip of water to run from faucets — especially those located along exterior walls. This keeps water moving through your pipes and helps prevent freezing.

Focus on the cold water taps farthest from your water meter, and open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer indoor air to circulate.

4. Know Where Your Main Shutoff Valve Is

In the event that a pipe does freeze and burst, shutting off your home’s water quickly can minimize damage. Make sure you and other members of your household know where the main shutoff valve is located and how to use it.

For most homes, the valve is located near the front of the house, close to where the water line enters from the street.

5. Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

If you’re unsure whether your home is winter-ready — or if you’ve had issues in the past — it may be worth having a licensed plumber perform a seasonal inspection.

A quick visit now could help identify vulnerable areas, confirm proper insulation, and provide peace of mind before temperatures dip.

Final Thoughts

A little preparation now can save you from major plumbing problems later. Houston freezes may be rare, but as recent years have shown, they're not impossible. Taking a few simple precautions before winter weather arrives can help protect your home, avoid costly repairs, and keep your plumbing system running smoothly through the season.
